Continuing Education Grant Request

Technical Services Section (TSS) is committed to supporting the research needs of its members. Our approach is to subsidize the continuing education costs of members who wish to pursue research in health sciences librarianship, but may lack to means to do so. TSS will provide one annual grant to a TSS member who has taken (or proposes to take) a continuing education class directed at developing research skills. This grant will cover the actual cost of the course--up to the cost of the most expensive, single-day MLA CE course. All incidental expenses, including transportation, room and board are the responsibility of the successful applicant.

The Research Committee prefers that members take classes from the MLA CE roster.  Eligible classes for support are those that are listed when searching the MLA Educational Clearinghouse for the general subject "Research Methods."  Any program listed here is eligible for TSS support.

Members may apply for TSS support for non-MLA classes.  The TSS Research Committee must first approve the class before support will be awarded.

If more than one member applies annually, the TSS Research Committee will select the successful applicant.

Eligibility

  1. All applicants must hold a graduate degree in library science.
  2. All applicants must be practicing medical librarians with at least one year of professional experience.
  3. All applicants must be members of the Technical Services Section of MLA.

Terms:

  1. Applicants must apply to the current chair of the TSS Research Committee.
  2. Deadline for applications: Jan. 31. CE grant will be awarded at the TSS Annual Business Meeting for applications received by this deadline.
  3. CE courses eligible for support must be taken either within the nine months prior to the TSS Business Meeting at which the award is made or during the six months following the TSS Business Meeting.
  4. Grants will cover the actual tuition costs of the course, up to a maximum of the most expensive, single-day MLA CE course. TSS members are responsible for all incidental expenses.
  5. Successful applicants must supply a copy of CE contact hours certificate to Chair of TSS Research Committee to substantiate successful completion of course. Either this certificate or a finished registration form for an upcoming course must be submitted before money can be disbursed.
  6. Current officers and committee chairs of TSS and members of the Research Committee are not eligible to apply for CE grants.
  7. Only one annual grant is offered.
  8. All awards are made by the TSS Research Committee. The primary criterion is the member's potential to conduct high quality research in support of Technical Services interests following completion of the course. If no applications of suitable quality are received, the committee need not present an award.
  9. If the grant results in the publication of research, please acknowledge the support of Technical Services Section in the actual publication.
